07 August What Is A URLURL - Uniform Resource Locator
A URL is an address on the Internet.
Everypiece of information stored on the Internet has a URL. That is how the information is found.
The URL starts with http:// and then provides the location of the information required.
When you store an mp3 or jpg, for example, on a site like Ripway, it will be given a URL so that you can retrieve it at any time on demand.
The URL will begin: http://www.home.ripway.com regardless of what the file is. That is because Ripway store it in a section called 'home' at their address: ripway.com. Then they assign the file a tag which is a unique identifier of one particular file. Like this: 2005-5/314238/JennySmiles.jpg
The last part of the tag contains the description of the file. In this case a piture of JennySmiles. The last part of the tag will be the file format. In this case it is a .jpg (a picture) It could have been .mp3 (a music file) or .avi (a sound or video file).
When you type this URL into the web browser, a link is formed to the file and it is opened. You then see the picture, hear the music or see the video.
I hope you have learned something new from this information and that you have found it useful.
