Lesson Thirty-Three - Full Page Blog With Custom Lists Inside

This Lesson Will Show you how to make your blog module as wide as your page and then have all your custom lists appear inside it down the right hand edge.

This is how this page is set out

This code will only be in effect while the blog containing the code is visable on your main screen. This means as soon as the blog containing the code is not visible when your page is opened by your visitors the screen will revert to it's original form of a separate blog column and custom list column.

    • To begin you need to choose the layout of: Left hand wide column and a narrow right hand column.
Do this by choosing customise while you are on the Edit my page view. Then select layout. Then select the layout described. Don't forget to Save.

    • Next You need to put this little code in your custom box at the end of the rest of the html.

    Then Save

(If you don't have a custom box find out how to add one by following lesson 13 on this page.)

    • Next Make a new blog entry and click on html. Put this code onto the page that opens.

(Nothing else must go in this blog with the code. So title it something you will recognise and can come back to - for Instance - the name of your site. Then if the code stops working you can copy and paste the html into a new entry and it will start working again. You must then delete the first entry or the two tables will conflict with each other.)

WHEN YOU PREVIEW YOUR SITE YOU MAY FIND THAT THE MAIN BLOG TEXT STARTS TOO FAR DOWN THE PAGE WHILE THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN STARTS AT THE TOP.

THIS IS CAUSED BY THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN CUSTOM LISTS BEING LONGER THAN THE BLOG ENTRIES. SIMPLY GO INTO YOUR BLOG SETTINGS AND CHANGE THE NUMBER SO THAT MORE ENTRIES SHOW ON YOUR PAGE.

Lesson Twenty-Seven - Changing The Order Of Your Column List

I was asked recently if I knew of a way of changing the order of the items in a list. There is only one way I know of and depending on the length of your list it can be time consuming.

    1. First you need to know that every new item added to a list is placed at the bottom.
    2. Next you need to know that every time you edit any information on one of those items when you save the changes that item goes to the bottom of the list.

So here is what you do

    • Go to Edit My Page and find your column.
    • Click on Edit List
    • Now you have a complete list of all the items in the list.
    • Start with the item you want to appear first in your ideal order.
    • Click on the Edit pencil then click Save.
    • Don't do this action too quickly or you get an error message. Leave a second or two between clicking on edit and clicking on save.
    • Continue to do this until you have the order you desire.
    • Don't expect the list to change in front of your eyes. Nothing will appear to change order until you refresh the screen. You don't want to do this until you have finished the editing.

    Hope you find this useful

    Have fun

Lesson Twenty-Six - Keeping All Your HTML Codes Safe.

This is the best advice I can give to anyone who is making improvements to their site using HTML.

    FIRST:
    Open a word document.
    Click on File
    Click on Save As
Title it 'My MSN HTML Codes'
    Save it to your desktop
    Click Save
    THEN:
Everytime you use an HTML code copy and paste it into this document and save it. Make sure you title the code so you know what it does.

Now if anything happens on your site, and you need to reload the code, you have a record of it. Then you don't have to remember where and how you got it in the first place.

Lesson Twenty-Five - Return To Home Page

     Fly Away Home

Here is my button to return to the home page. Click on this button and it will return you to my entry page.

Here is how to make one for yourself.

    • Find a small picture/icon that you would like to use as a button. See column heading Clipart & Animations.
    • Upload the picture/icon to a storage site. See column heading Storage sites.
    • Open a word document and copy then paste the following code into the page.

Fly Away Home

    • Change the blue URL with your own space address
    • Change the pink URL with the address of the picture/icon
    • Change the green text with your own message e.g home or start.

Copy and paste the revised text into your blog wherever you want your visitor to be able to return to the top of the page rather than have to scroll.

    Lesson Twenty-Three - Using Permalink

    What is Permalink?

When you click on permalink it opens up a box with the exact address
of that blog as it is found on the web.

With this address you can acurately find that page
out of the many millions of pages on the web.

Copy and paste this permalink into a custom list.

Lesson Twenty-Two - Placing An Image In A Blog

Choose your Image that you want to place in the blog and have it hosted by a storage website.

There are many of these. For some suggestions, see my column headed Storage Sites.

I use photobucket and am very pleased with them.

The following directions apply to photobucket

When you have uploaded your photo it will be stored in your album and it will have 3 codes attatched to it. You can easily copy and paste these codes.

    • The first code is the URL. When ever you see a piece of code that has a URL in it you can replace it with your URL code
    • The second is a tag. You use the tag to reproduce the image into your blog.
    • The third is an img. You use this to reproduce the image into someones online guestbook.

We are concerned here with Placing the image in your blog.

    This is very simple.

    • Copy the tag
    • Open the
in your blog
    • Paste the tag into it.

By default the image will appear on the left of the blog.

Add this piece of code before the tag to place it either in the center or on the right

    or

With this code you can add a playlist to your Windows Media player so that your visitors can choose
which track they want to listen to.
It will also play through the playlist automatically.

This is quite complicated to follow so please take each step slowly and make sure you follow each step closely.

    • If you don't have Windows media player on your site Go Here
    • Open Notepad ( click in this order - start, programs, accessories, notepad)
    • Select File - then select Save As
    • Save notepad as Playlist.mp3 - (Change this to be the format of the items in the playlist. eg. .wma or .avi etc. all tracks must have the same format.)
    • Save as type - all files
    • Copy and paste this code into notepad
    • <ASX Version="3.0">

NAME OF MUSIC LIST

NAME OF SONG

      <Ref
href="THE URL OF THE MUSIC FILE"/>

      </asx>
    • Save
    • Change the information shown in Green.
    • NAME OF MUSICLIST - Call it whatever you want so you will recognise it. I called mine simply Playlist
    • NAME OF SONG - Or track.
    • NAME OF ARTIST - Who is it made or performed by
    • THE URL OF THE MUSIC FILE - Get this from your storage site
    • To add more tracks copy and paste this section only:

NAME OF SONG

      <Ref
href="THE URL OF THE MUSIC FILE
      "/>

    • into the code above immediately after the

and before </asx> This is really important.
    • You can enter as many new tracks as you like
    • Make sure you save your work often.
    • When you have finished you can upload the playlist to your storage site. (see storage sites column on my home page)
    • Collect the URL of the playlist from your storage site and paste it into the media player make sure the player is set to display mode FULL

    Lesson Twenty - Framed Text

The Best way to describe this little code is to illustrate it.

This is a song I have written

    Please do not copy it.

The Child Behind The Woman's Eyes

She is huddled in a corner with her face against the wall

She is shaking in her misery without the strength to call

Won't someone out there help her before she has to fall

She's the child behind the woman's eyes

The nights are long she cannot seem to sleep

She knows what's coming she hears the footsteps creep

She hears the breathing her heart is filled with fear

In that moment her mind has disappeared

She's the child behind the woman's eyes

She is hiding no one hears her cries She is pleading stop these awful lies She's the child behind the woman's eyes

He says he loves her but all he gives is pain

He says he needs her and here he comes again

She wants to believe him but still it hurts the same

She is the child behind the woman's eyes

You can't see her She's used to keeping still

Cos she know the consequences will

Be more frightening than stiffling her cries

She is the Child behind the woman's eyes

You need 3 pictures for this code. Upload them to a storage site. There are some links to storage sites on this page.

Copy the URL of the pictures and place them in the places shown in this HTML code.

    HERE IS THE CODE:

ENTER YOUR OWN TEXT HERE

IN THIS LESSON YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO:

    • Make a picture for a background lighter or darker
    • Fade out into the edges of the picture
    • Fade into the middle.
    • Change the style of the fade

    FIRST TAKE A PICTURE

Upload it to a storage site like Photobucket (For other suggestions see list heading 'Storage Sites')

Copy and Paste the picture URL into this code where indicated:

Opacity=100 - This is the start Opacity

FinishOpacity=100 - This is the finish Opacity

    100 = Normal  0 = Invisible

Now all you have to do is decide where you want the Opacity to start and finish.

      • Where you start it, the picture will be darker
      • Where you end it, the picture will be lighter.

To choose the start and finish you change the Style=2 number

          • 1 = Fades Left to Right
          • 2 = Fades Centrally
          • 3 = Fades From Corners

     Style 1

     Style 2

     Style 3

Making the Pictue into a Watermark

Change both Opacity settings to be the same number This one is 50/50 you can take away as little or as much of the colour as you need.
